Why is this necessary?

The purpose of registering your food facility with the FDA is so that the FDA can keep track of whoever has access to the products from receipt of raw materials through sale to the consumer.  It is necessary to do this in case of any health emergency that may require a recall of the product.  To verify the physical address of the food facility, FDA utilizes the services of Dun & Bradstreet, who issues DUNS Numbers.  A food facility can no longer register with the FDA without this number.

How can I get a DUNS Number?

Create an online account if needed.  Pay close attention to the email address used in your application; all future correspondence from D&B will come to this email.  During the process you will need to upload a copy of a business license, permit, etc. issued by a government authority. 

It's all about the address.

Basically, the physical address of the food establishment registered with the FDA must exactly match the address listed in the D&B database. This address must match the address listed on the government business license or permit. After verification by D&B, this indicates to the FDA that the products are actually being handled at the registered address.
